Breaking the Break

On 5th May the HRD announced that the JEE and NEET exams have been postponed till the month of July and August, due to COVID-19. This got me thinking as to what impact it will have on my students. Come to think about it, it is a glass half full; half-empty kind of a situation.

Looking at it from the glass half empty situation, it can be frustrating that the students have to continue studying for another 2 months. It can build frustration as they were so close to complete their academics.COVID19 has thrown the world out of its wits. Students might get a little laid back as they don’t have to appear for the exam in the near future. Losing the focus can cost them in the longer run.

Looking at it from glass half full situation, one can utilize the extra time for one's benefit and make the most out of it. Students who were lagging can buckle up and make it to the finish line. You get more time to revise, get more time to solve questions, get more time to be prepared.

In each of the situation maintaining one, sanity is important. Sanity can be maintained by doing things that bring peace and calm. One can read, read, and read. Read academics books or non-academic books. Reading will help you to escape from reality and take you to another world. The more you read the more you will benefit. Readings enrich your vocabulary, expand your horizon, and empowers your imagination. Give your brain something new to read every day.

One can take the help of music by singing, playing a musical instrument, or simply listening to music. Music is a beautiful medium to calm your mind down and attain focus. Good music can uplift your mood and refresh your mind during study breaks

Another way of coping with stress in this current situation is to exercise. As they rightly say,’ A healthy mind resides in a healthy body’. Any form of physical exercises like yoga, indoor workout, or even Zumba will increase dopamine levels in the brain which will decrease stress. But make sure you follow safety measures while you exercise.
One can also build on their hobbies and learn new skills. There is a lot of course available online, sign up for a course you wanted to for a long time but didn’t have time to pursue it. The world is your oyster. Watch DIY videos and try building new things. This will help you in keeping your mind sharp.

In the end, remember that patience and perseverance are the two virtues which will help you to succeed through these times and ahead in life.
